Additional Investment by Merck Sharp and Dohme
Merck Sharp & Dohme Biologics ( Ireland ) Ltd. has announced an additional €20million investment as part of the
first phase of construction for the company’s new vaccines and biologics facility in Carlow. The additional
investment brings to €220 million Merck Sharp & Dohme’s investment in Carlow, putting the facility at the
forefront of global advancements in vaccines and biologics.

vaccine facility at Carlow Town, where Merck has acquired the 65 acre IDA Business and Technology Park.

Merck Sharp and Dohme secures planning approval [ word 40kb ]
Merck Sharp and Dohme has been formally awarded planning approval by Carlow County Council for its new €200million Carlow
facility. Construction activity at the site on the Dublin Road is expected to get underway in the coming weeks.
The employment potential from the development is significant. Over 300 construction jobs will be taken up over the course of
the construction phase which is expected to last approximately 18 months. When operational, Merck Sharp and Dohme expects to
employ 170 people full-time.

Unum to
establish a software center
Unum, a US based industry leader in employee benefits and the largest provider of group and individual
disability income protection insurance in the US and the UK, is to establish a strategic software
service centre in Carlow town. The software service centre will provide support to a range of
activities, such as IT and quality assurance, associated with Unum’s US operations. The
new investment will create up to 200 new high-level positions. Recruitment is to begin immediately.

Major investment by Merck
Merck is a global research-driven pharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures and
markets a broad range of innovative products to improve human health. The new Carlow facility, which
will be the first stand-alone human vaccine project in Ireland, will involve a formulation and sterile
filling operation and an R&D team to support a number of recently launched vaccines and new products
in the future. Merck also intends to seek opportunities to collaborate with Irish academic
institutions in the area of biologics production.
